RTI Strategies That Work in the Classroom: A Comprehensive Guide for Educators
RTI is a three-tiered system of supports. The tiers are designed to provide increasingly intensive levels of support to students who are struggling.
- Tier 1: Universal screening and progress monitoring is conducted for all students. Students who are struggling are identified and provided with additional support.
- Tier 2: Targeted interventions are provided to students who are still struggling after receiving Tier 1 support.
- Tier 3: Intensive interventions are provided to students who are still struggling after receiving Tier 2 support.
There are a variety of RTI interventions that can be provided to students. The type of intervention that is provided will vary depending on the student's individual needs.
- Academic interventions: Academic interventions focus on improving students' academic skills. These interventions may include providing extra instruction in reading, math, or writing.
- Behavioral interventions: Behavioral interventions focus on improving students' behavior. These interventions may include teaching students how to manage their emotions, follow directions, and work independently.
- Social-emotional interventions: Social-emotional interventions focus on improving students' social and emotional skills. These interventions may include teaching students how to build relationships, resolve conflicts, and cope with stress.
Data-based decision making is essential for effective RTI implementation. Data is used to identify students who are struggling and to determine the effectiveness of interventions. Data can also be used to make decisions about moving students between tiers of RTI.

The following types of data are typically used in RTI:
- Screening data: Screening data is used to identify students who are at risk for academic or behavioral problems.
- Progress monitoring data: Progress monitoring data is used to track students' progress over time.
- Intervention data: Intervention data is used to determine the effectiveness of interventions.
Here are some tips for implementing RTI strategies in your own classroom:
- Start small: Don't try to implement too many RTI strategies at once. Start with a few key strategies that you think will be most effective for your students.
- Be flexible: There is no one-size-fits-all approach to RTI. Be flexible and adapt your strategies to meet the needs of your students.
- Monitor progress: Regularly monitor student progress to determine if interventions are effective. Make adjustments to your strategies as needed.
- Collaborate with others: Collaborate with other teachers, administrators, and parents to ensure that students are receiving the support they need.
RTI is a powerful tool that can be used to help students who are struggling in school. By implementing RTI strategies in your classroom, you can help your students reach their full potential.
