In 1983, Bereznai co-founded the Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC),one of the world's first organizations dedicated to fighting HIV/AIDS. GMHC provided a safe haven for people living with HIV/AIDS, and it offered a range of services, including housing, medical care, and counseling.
