The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are a set of educational standards that have been adopted by 45 states and the District of Columbia. The CCSS were developed to ensure that all students are college and career ready by the time they graduate from high school. Vocabulary

Vocabulary is the knowledge of words and their meanings. It is important for reading and writing because it allows children to understand what they are reading and to express themselves clearly.

Acquire new words in a variety of contexts.
Understand the meanings of words.
Use words correctly in speech and writing.
Expand vocabulary through reading and listening to stories.

Comprehension

Comprehension is the ability to understand what one reads or hears. It involves the ability to make inferences, draw s, and summarize information.

Understand and respond to simple stories.

Instructional Strategies

There are a variety of instructional strategies that can be used to teach the Common Core Literacy standards in the Prekindergarten classroom. These strategies include:

Play-based learning: Play is a natural way for children to learn. It allows them to explore their environment, develop their imagination, and practice new skills. Play-based learning can be used to teach all of the Common Core Literacy standards.
