The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are a set of educational standards that have been adopted by 45 states and the District of Columbia. The CCSS were developed to ensure that all students are college and career ready by the time they graduate from high school. The standards are based on the belief that all students can learn and succeed, and they provide a clear and consistent framework for teaching and learning.

The CCSS for Literacy are organized into four strands: Reading, Writing, Language, and Speaking and Listening. The standards for each strand are further divided into grade-level expectations. Phonics

Phonics is the relationship between letters and sounds. It is important for reading because it allows children to decode words by sounding them out. The Prekindergarten CCSS for phonics include the following:

  • Recognize and name the uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
  • Associate the sounds of the alphabet with the corresponding letters.
  • Blend sounds to form words.
  • Segment words into individual sounds.

Print Awareness

Print awareness is the understanding of how print works. It includes the ability to recognize and identify different types of print, as well as the ability to understand the conventions of print (e.g., left to right, top to bottom).

The Prekindergarten CCSS for print awareness include the following:

  • Recognize and identify different types of print (e.g., books, magazines, newspapers).
  • Understand the conventions of print (e.g., left to right, top to bottom).
  • Follow print from left to right and top to bottom.
  • Identify and name the parts of a book (e.g., cover, title page, table of contents).

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is the knowledge of words and their meanings. It is important for reading and writing because it allows children to understand what they are reading and to express themselves clearly.

The Prekindergarten CCSS for vocabulary include the following:

  • Acquire new words in a variety of contexts.
  • Understand the meanings of words.
  • Use words correctly in speech and writing.
  • Expand vocabulary through reading and listening to stories.

Comprehension

Comprehension is the ability to understand what one reads or hears. It involves the ability to make inferences, draw s, and summarize information.

The Prekindergarten CCSS for comprehension include the following:

  • Understand and respond to simple stories.
  • Make inferences and draw s.
  • Summarize information.
  • Retell stories.

Instructional Strategies

There are a variety of instructional strategies that can be used to teach the Common Core Literacy standards in the Prekindergarten classroom. These strategies include:

  • Play-based learning: Play is a natural way for children to learn. It allows them to explore their environment, develop their imagination, and practice new skills. Play-based learning can be used to teach all of the Common Core Literacy standards.
  • Interactive read-alouds: Reading aloud to children is a great way to introduce them to new vocabulary, concepts, and ideas. It also helps them to develop their listening comprehension skills. Interactive read-alouds involve children in the reading process by asking them questions, making predictions, and retelling the story.
  • Shared writing: Shared writing is a collaborative writing process that involves the teacher and students working together to create a piece of writing. This strategy can be used to teach children how to write different types of texts, such as stories, poems, and informational texts.

Assessment

It is important to assess children's progress in order to ensure that they are meeting the Common Core Literacy standards. Assessment can be done through a variety of methods, such as observation, portfolios, and assessments.

Observation is a great way to assess children's progress in a natural setting. Teachers can observe children during play, during read-alouds, and during writing activities. They can use this information to determine what children know and can do, as well as what areas need to be addressed.
