The Genesis of Damageplan

After the breakup of Pantera, one of the most influential heavy metal bands of all time, Dimebag Darrell formed Damageplan in 2003. Joining him were his brother Vinnie Paul Abbott on drums, Pat Lachman on vocals, and Bob Zilla on bass.

The band's sound was a continuation of the heavy and groove-oriented style that Pantera had pioneered. Damageplan's debut album, "New Found Power," was released in February 2004 and received critical acclaim for its raw energy and technical prowess.

Tragedy Strikes: The Columbus Incident

On December 8, 2004, Damageplan performed at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio. During the performance, deranged fan Nathan Gale stormed the stage and fatally shot Darrell three times. The incident also resulted in the deaths of three others: Nathan Bray (a security guard),Jeff "Mayhem" Thompson (a fan),and Erin Halk (a club employee).

Gale was apprehended at the scene and later pleaded guilty to murder. He was sentenced to death and remains on Ohio's death row.

The loss of Dimebag Darrell was a devastating blow to the metal community. Damageplan disbanded, and the remaining members pursued other projects. Vinnie Paul formed Hell Yeah, while Bob Zilla and Pat Lachman joined other bands.
